The Guide:

Makes the “business case” for employer involvement in smoking cessation, highlighting the enormous direct and indirect costs—both in health care and lost productivity—of smoking.

  • Answers the question, “Why should smoking cessation be dealt with in the workplace?”
  • Provides information for public and private sector personnel who have a stake in managing the health and performance of employees and their families.
  • Offers encouragement to employers, modeling the success of the Union Pacific Railroad, a company of more than 50,000 unionized employees spread out across the USA with a high incidence of employee smoking. Through its incremental, integrated approach to antismoking initiatives, Union Pacific reduced the incidence of smoking among employees from 40% in 1993 to 25% in 2001.
  • Shows employers how to:
    • Determine the business’s health liability;
    • Ask the right questions and consult the experts in choosing health insurance plans that promote cessation (i.e., ones that cover antismoking pharmacotherapy and tobacco cessation counseling);
    • Initiate thoughtful and effective smoking policies in the workplace.
  • Presents ideas and resources for a myriad of workplace-based smoking cessation programs.

PACT’s vision is that the opportunity for employers to reduce the negative impact of smoking has never been greater, and that both large and small employers have affordable options at their disposal.
